A Green Future?
When Klima+ went live in January, Kirsten Brøchner, CEO, presented Brøchner Hotels initiatives regarding climate change, CO2 quotas and energy optimization. 175 professionals attended the Kickoff to get inspiration for how to save energy and to protect the environment. (Watch it on TV2 Lorry). Klima+ is a green network for those of the Copenhagen businesses who wish to seize the climate challenge. The Front-runners are the 6 -8 most ambitious companies working with specified reductions. Technology and Environment Mayor, Klaus Bondam, hosted the event, and subsequently he scheduled visits to the hotels, to look at how we integrate climate considerations into the daily work.
After Brøchner Hotels became carbon neutral an environment committee was set up with the purpose to generate bright ideas on how to reduce energy waste. This has led to a wide range of activities - collaborations in green network, involvement of the staff and concrete actions at the hotels:
Light sensors have been installed in passages to provide light when needed and to turn off, as soon as there is no activity.
We are testing if iced water is a satisfactory alternative to spring water in plastic bottles, which are very energy-intensive both in manufacture and transport. In Denmark we still have good and clean water in the taps - so why not take advantage of it. For technical reasons bottled spring water is still necessary in the mini bars at the Hotel Kong Arthur.
In all of our small double rooms, we will switch the two single duvets with one double duvet. This gives a saving of 33% - especially in tumble drying time. Many would rather share a double duvet than sleep with single duvets. Besides, the small double rooms are often used as single rooms.
Is it necessary to serve a kiwi from New Zealand or would a Pineapple apple from Slagelse do? Is it necessary to have the milk delivered every day, or could we manage with a delivery every other day? Are there other supplies, where we can save kilometers?
Regarding networks: we have applied our trade association for approval as a "Green Key Hotel". Some of our employees are involved in climate networks. We have joined the "1 ton less campaign" as partners and have thus given the commitment to help spread the climate message. This includes a series of speeches and lectures held in schools and businesses.
The world's first carbon neutral hotel chain
When Brøchner Hotels became carbon neutral - as the world's first carbon neutral hotel chain, we changed to an environmentally friendly electricity supplier, which provides power mainly produced by climate-friendly energy sources. In the past year we have implemented a number of energy conservations and initiated a global network for carbon neutral hotels (CO2-neutral hotels). We have also given our customers the opportunity to participate in the the climate cause with a "Weekend stay with CO2 quota", which neutralises any energy heavy transport to Copenhagen.
