“Sleep Seasons” at Hotel Fox
During COP15, members of the Danish police force moved into Hotel Fox - arguably not the ideal hotel for the police, but during COP15 it was a bit of a puzzle to make everything fit together. The last vacant room at Hotel Fox was number 121, ‘Sleep Seasons’ - also called the tent room. Some would refuse to 'camp' in a hotel, but ‘Sleep Seasons’ has a number of fans and has been inhabited by both international executives, musicians and many others.
The Australian design collective Rinzen, has described Sleep Seasons like this: "The Sleep Season room was inspired by the desire to hibernate (really!). It creates a cosy nook filled with animals sleeping through the seasons of the year. As the year passes, the animals sleep, blissfully unaware of their surroundings". At www.hotelfox.dk you can read the artists' comments to their rooms.
During COP15
During COP15 a young policeman from Vejle had the pleasure of staying in ‘Sleep Seasons’. Staying in a tent sleeping on a mattress on the floor for 8 days with long shifts was possibly a bit much, but Frank Sejersted was very pleased with his stay anyway: "the feeling among my colleagues and I is that we all enjoyed staying at the hotel. The staff was really friendly, the food delicious and the coffee first class, contributing greatly to us having an awesome stay in Copenhagen. The hotel's concept is great and paying visits to my colleagues' rooms was very entertaining - the rooms’ different interior design was a good subject for conversation..."
Events and photo shoots
Fox's hotel rooms are subject backgrounds for many photo shoots, especially in the context of fashion photography, musicians and celebrities. Alltogether a whole lot has happened at the Hotel Fox since 2005, when the hotel was set up as part of an event in cooperation with Volkswagen.
A hotel is created
For those unaware of the history - a brief summary: Artists from around the world were invited to submit proposals for a room concept. Likewise, students from culinary, hotel, and hotel management schools in Europe were invited to participate in the development of the hotel concept. Participants were selected in cooperation with the German event agency, Eventlabs, and a couple of German art galleries. The event itself took place over several months in the spring of 2005, and was concluded by bringing a large number of international journalists to Copenhagen. Of course, the transport from the airport was carried out by a Fox car (Volkswagen) and the accommodation was at the brand new Hotel Fox. Over 2 days the press people attended a program, which included dinners, electronica, art and cars.
Stay in art
Hotel Fox has often been misinterpreted and perceived as a design hotel, which it has never been although you do find ’design’ in the hotel such as a variety of unique carpets produced by the Danish company Egetæpper designed by various artists. Design hotels are often associated with 4 or 5 star luxury, whereas Hotel Fox is more an art project, where some of the rooms are fragile and therefore regularly restored. At Hotel Fox you can experience living art - you can stay in art.
