The World’s First CO2-Neutral Hotelchain
Brøchner Hotels have become CO2 neutral on energy consumption on all 4 hotels and have thus become the world’s first CO2 neutral hotelchain.

The Brøchner Mortensen family wanted to do participate actively in reducing the global emission of greenhouse gases. After having consulted the experts in the field, the solution was to buy up carbon credits amounting to the total energy consumption of the entire chain. At the same time Brøchner Hotels has taken the initiative for a global network of CO2 neutral hotels.

There are lots of ways to become CO2-neutral, but for Brøchner Hotels the challenge lay in the fact that the hotels are located in the middle of Copenhagen. Had they been located in an open landscape, we could have used windmills. Or if the hotels had been in a mountainous region with roaring waterfalls, we could have built a watermill. Or if the hotels had been on a tropical, sunfilled beach, we could have installed solar panels on the roof. But when the hotels are located on our longitude and latitudes, we are very much depending on our local energy provider.

Every time a carbon credit is purchased and delisted, the price of remaining credits increases. As the price of carbon credits increases, it becomes increasingly attractive for power companies to invest in green energy. Buying one CO2 quota erases the privilege to release one tonne of CO2 into the atmosphere.

We have not only plans of becoming CO2 neutral in the future, but we are CO2 neutral today. At the same time we have initiated a 5-step climate programme to ensure that we e.g. save on electricity consumption wherever it may be possible. See the 5 step programme on our website »

a NEW RATING SYSTEM FOR HOTELS
At the same time Brøchner Hotels has instigated a global rating system for hotels that also aim to become entirely CO2 neutral. This rating system will include hotels that can document their CO2 neutrality either by installing wind turbines on their lots, mounting solar cells on their roofs, or purchasing and delisting carbon credits or credits corresponding to their collective energy - and heat consumption.
